Aqueduct Park Rome Is An Urban Escape

I enjoy sharing the things I love about Rome and Italy with others, but everyone has a different experience with the city and the country. Some people are enjoying their first trip here and want to know more about the important sites to make sure they see everything they should in the time available to them. They want to experience the sites that they have only seen in pictures or movies.

Other people that I’ve spoken to have already seen the Colosseum, the Spanish Steps and the Pantheon and are looking for something a little different. Something important, or at least interesting, that might be a little less crowded. I would make my recommendations based on the number of times the person has been to Rome. For example, the sites I listed above are the “First Trip” sites and shouldn’t be missed. Subsequent trips to Rome can include them again if you want to build a deeper connection with the city, but maybe you are looking for something new.

I’ve also experienced coming to Rome and having a bit of an emergency. Nothing serious, but for example maybe you forgot to pack socks, your belt broke or you cell phone is acting funny. I had a desperate need for a mall and I found one easy to get to with the store I needed. I also learned that there is a beautiful park nearby, so that’s how I initially learned about the Parco degli Acquedotti.

Parco degli Acquedotti

The Park of the Aqueducts is a public park to the southeast of Rome. It’s part of the Appian Way Regional Park (Parco Regionale dell’Appia Antica). As you might guess, the park is named after the ruins of the aqueducts that run throughout the park.

Aqua Claudia

From the construction of the first aqueduct and for 850 years Rome was able to use a water supply that had no equal, in abundance and quality, in any city of the ancient world. A grassy area of almost 600 acres having a great visual impact, once the Roman countryside, houses 6 of the 11 aqueducts. The arches of the Claudio Aqueduct are impressive and are still used today for irrigation.

Aqueduct Park Rome Amenities

I’ve noticed that running, biking and dog walking are the popular things to do when  I’ve been to the park. There are other things to do as well and these include:

  • Bars and Restaurants in and around the park

  • Drinking fountains

  • Tables and Picnic areas

  • Unfortunately, there are no areas for having a barbecue.

Cinecittà Mall Is Near The Park

This was the first mall that I ever went to in Rome when, as I described in the introduction, I forgot to pack something I needed. I also had a strong desire to get away from tourists and have a shopping experience like the locals. It is a lower end mall that worked out in a pinch, but if you are looking for a wider selection of clothes, electronics and furnishings, there are other malls I would choose.

If you want something quick and easy, check out this mall if you forgot to pack something, if you bought an SIM from an Italian cellular company or you are looking for a gift.

Movie Magic At Cinecittà Studios

Cinecittà Studios is a large film studio in Rome and with an area of 99 acres, it is considered the historical hub of Italian cinema. Mussolini was well aware of the power the films could provide to promote his propaganda, so he pumped a lot of money into the studios during the Fascist era as part of a plan to revive the Italian film industry.

Over its 80-year history, over 3,000 films were produced in Cinecittà Studios and as many as 51 films have won the Oscar. Some of the more familiar include: Roman Holiday, Ben-Hur. Fellini’s La Dolce Vita, and Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet.

If you are interested, there are tours available of the studio. This public project is called: Cinecittà Shows Off (Cinecittà Si Mostra) and has been open to the public since 2011 providing visitors a chance to visit the outdoor sets and the historic buildings which house a number of themed exhibitions.

How To Get To Aqueduct Park Rome, The Studio or The Mall

The easiest and fastest way to get to the area is to take Metro A towards Anagnina and exit at the Subaugusta stop. This will get you near Cinecittà Studios, the Mall and a convenient entrance to the park. You can also choose the bus on weekdays and holidays. Check out numbers: 502, 503, 552 or 654, whichever is convenient for you.
