The Frascati Region Of Italy Is Rome’s Center Of Wine

A Frascati day trip from Rome, Italy brings wine lovers to the center of Rome’s vineyards giving you a chance to taste these amazing Lazio wines.

Recently, we made a trip to the Frascati region for a delicious lunch at a winery in the area. It was an amazing experience that I think everyone should have because of the tranquil setting that is in contrast to the noisy and chaotic Rome ambience.

After lunch, we stopped by the region’s central city, Frascati. It is a hilltop town southeast of Rome that anchors the region. We enjoyed a stroll around the town and I was lucky enough to be able to return a couple days later for a coffee and some photos. Hopefully I’ve been able to capture the beauty and tranquility.

What’s Beautiful About Frascati?

For me, the beauty of Frascati lies in its sweeping views of the surrounding countryside and vineyards. On a clear morning the views seem endless. There are stops around Frascati to stop and absorb the neighboring towns, take a picture or just sip an espresso.

Some of my traveling companions were a little disappointed that the wine region around Rome wasn’t as beautiful as the images they’ve seen from the Tuscan wine region and surrounding area. This is a fair criticism, because the two areas aren’t comparable in beauty, popularity or wine history. The way I look at it is: This is the Rome wine region. A little rougher around the edges, but still full of vintners looking to create the best wines possible for their customers.

Mostly being the capital of the Rome wine region. There are some sites listed below that might be of interest, but for me, it is the central meeting point for a vineyard tour and a great place for lunch in between your stops.

The town of Frascati is 22 miles (35 km) southeast of Rome. It is a hilltop town that is accessible by car, regional train from Termini Station or a connecting Cotral Bus from the neighboring towns.

How Long Does The Train From Frascati To Rome Take?

Reaching Frascati is easy by TrenItalia from Termini Station in Rome. It is a regional train, which means there are a couple stops between Rome and Frascati. It costs only €2.10 each way and there are a couple hourly trains in the morning with a couple hourly trains in the afternoon for the return. It takes around 35 minutes to reach Frascati and you arrive only a flight of stairs below the center of town.

How Long Does It Take To Visit Frascati?

This depends on what you are trying to accomplish. For me, enjoying a light breakfast, having a hill climb to the villa and a stop in the Cathedral lasted only 2-3 hours at a slow walking pace. More time will be needed for the museum and possibly lunch, but I would say that a half-day is plenty to enjoy this beautiful town.
